The short version: three layers, not three rivals
GEO, AEO and SEO are not competing strategies you pick between. They are three layers of the same goal: being found when someone is looking for what you sell. Each layer targets a different surface where people search.
- SEO targets the classic list of blue links on a search results page.
- AEO targets direct answers: featured snippets, voice assistants and the answer boxes that sit above the links.
- GEO targets generative AI answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews naming and citing your store inside a written response.
The reason this matters now is that shoppers have spread across all three surfaces. Some still scroll Google links, some ask a voice assistant, and a fast-growing group asks an AI chatbot what to buy. A store that only does classic SEO is optimizing for one of three shelves.
